Why this is a Masterpiece
The realistic depiction of a woman makes this tomb figure especially fine. Now the paint has worn off, but during the time the paint was intact, the figure must have been extremely life-like.
Veistos on erityisen hieno esimerkki realistisesta ihmiskuvauksesta.
History of the Object
This tomb figurine depicts a woman standing with her hands clasped in front of her. She is wearing a long-sleeved dress with a bell-shaped skirt. The long, broad sleeves symbolize her status; she does not need to work with her hands. Her hair is parted in the middle and gathered in a knot at her neck. There are traces of white, red and black paint.
Tomb figurines from the Han period perhaps best illustrate the ability to produce fresh, realistic art. During the late Chou era, when the practice of sacrificing human beings to accompany a prominent personage to the grave came to an end, dolls of wood or clay were made instead to serve the same purpose. It was thus important to represent both the men and animals that had belonged to the deceased person's household as realistically as possible. These types of figures also tell us about how people dressed and lived in the Han period.
Hautaveistos esittää kädet edessään seisovaa naista. Hänellä on pitkähihanen puku, jossa kellomainen hame. Pitkät, leveät hihat symboloivat hänen korkeaa asemaansa - hänen ei tarvinnut tehdä ruumiillista työtä. Hiukset ovat keskeltä jakauksella ja ne on kerätty niskaan nutturalle.
