This is a fine example of the type of qingbai porcelain that was produced during the Yuan Dynasty, with its watery bluish glaze and delicate beading – both on the inside and outside. Unusually, there is an appliqué flower in the well of the cup. Despite the fragility, there is no damage to the piece.
History of the Object
The first recorded porcelain to reach Europe was a vase of this type of qingbai ware, coated with a watery bluish glaze. It was probably given to Louis the Great of Hungary when a Chinese embassy passed through his kingdom on their way to Pope Benedict XII in 1338. Dubbed the Fonthill Vase, it now resides at the National Museum of Ireland.
