Why this is a Masterpiece
The figure of the eagle is almost life-size with a wingspan of more than 160 cm. A very complicated technique of complex assembly was used. Each element is notable for its jewelry finishing, demonstrating virtuosity in the various methods of bone carving.

History of the Object
This sculptural composition with an eagle on a huge rootstock of an old pine and a four-part double-sided screen is a unique artistic ensemble of the Meiji period (1868-1912). It was a gift from the Emperor of Japan to the Russian Emperor Nicholas II at the occasion of his coronation in Moscow. The sculpture was delivered by the official delegation headed by the prince of Japan in the spring of 1896.
