The Weltmuseum Wien is one of the major museums of its kind. It was founded as an independent institution in the New Imperial Residence/Palace in 1928. Up to this date the ethnographic collections had formed part of the Museum of Natural History founded in 1876. The museum's collections document Austria´s relations to the non-European regions as well as the diversity, richness, and creativity of people and cultures from all around the world. The earliest of them came to Austria already in the 16th century. Presently the collection consists of ca. 185,000 objects and 25,000 historical photographs.
Das Weltmuseum Wien zählt zu den größten und bedeutendsten Museen seiner Art. Hervorgegangen aus der 1876 geschaffenen Anthropologisch-Ethnographischen Abteilung des Naturhistorischen Museums, wurde das Museum für Völkerkunde 1928 in der Neuen Burg eröffnet.
Seine Bestände, von denen die ältesten bereits im 16. Jahrhundert nach Österreich gelangt sind, dokumentieren nicht nur Österreichs Beziehungen zum außereuropäischen Raum, sondern auch die Vielfalt, den Reichtum und die Kreativität von Völkern und Kulturen aus allen Erdteilen. Heute umfasst die Sammlung ca. 185.000 Objekte und 25.000 historische Fotografien.
