Why this is a Masterpiece
Besides being a fine example of qingbai ware, this bottle is unusual in that the decoration is copying contemporary celadon decoration produced at the Longquan kilns of neighbouring Zhejiang Province. Originally used to hold wine, this bottle probably would have had a matching porcelain lid or wood stopper.
History of the Object
Starting during the 10th century, Qingbai wares are among the most successful of wares produced in China, and high quality examples produced during the Song Dynasty (960-1279) are among the finest of early porcelains. Qingbai wares also form the basis of the blue and white porcelain we know today. They have been represented in Imperial collections and can be found in the original holdings of the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
