Why this is a Masterpiece
Jeong Seon's accomplished artistry is fully demonstrated in this impressive depiction of Mt. Inwang, as viewed after a rain shower on a summer day. The wet, gigantic rocks are effectively described with repeated layers of dense ink strokes. They emerge with reigning dignity over a valley wrapped in hazy mist. It is designated as Korean National Treasure No. 216.
여름날 소나기가 내린 후 육상궁(毓祥宮) 뒤편 북악산 줄기의 산등성이에서 바라본 인왕산을 그린 것으로, 특히 막 개이기 시작하는 하늘 아래 웅장한 모습을 드러내는 산의 모습을 실감나게 묘사하였다. 물기가 남아 있는 거대한 암벽을 진한 먹을 중첩시켜 표현함으로써 괴량감(塊量感)을 나타내었고, 반대로 주변의 산들은 빠른 필선으로 간략하게 표현하였다. 또한 산허리 부분과 그 아래 계곡은 아직도 짙은 안개에 싸여 있는 것처럼 표현하여 바위산의 육중한 골격을 더욱 두드러지게 하고 있다. 이러한 표현법은 정선이 서울 근교의 진경 표현에 주로 사용한 화법으로 생각되고 있다. 이 작품은 국보 216호로 지정되어 있다.
History of the Object
This is undisputedly the greatest masterpiece by Jeong Seon, produced during the mature years of this towering figure in the history of Korean landscape painting. Born in the area of Mt. Bugak (North Mountain in Seoul), Jeong lived most of his later years at the foot of Mt. Inwang, located in the northwestern section of old Seoul. It is said that he tremendously enjoyed painting the mountain as viewed from his house. This magnificent piece is dated 1751, when the artist was 76 years old.
이 작품은 정선이 평생을 쌓아 온 진경산수화의 대가다운 기량을 마음껏 펼쳐 보인 걸작으로 <금강전도(金剛全圖)>와 더불어 정선 진경산수화의 대표작으로 꼽힌다. 겸재 정선은 금강산 그림 외에도 서울 근교의 명승지(名勝地)를 대상으로 많은 작품을 남겼다. 그 중에서도 인왕산(仁王山)을 자주 그렸는데, 이는 정선이 북악산 밑에서 태어나 자라고 중년 이후에는 인왕산 아래에서 살았던 것과 깊은 관련이 있다. 전반적으로 정선의 화풍이 만년에 이르러 극도로 완숙해졌음을 여실히 보여 주는 뛰어난 작품이다.
