Why this is a Masterpiece
The plump body of this jar, typical of mid-Joseon works, was made in two separate pieces which were then attached. The brushwork was very skillfully done on this interesting piece. Bands of clouds encircle the body, two at the top and one at the bottom, and the clouds are of an unusual shape, resembling flowers with tails. On the round belly of the jar are painted large bamboo stalks with long leaves attached in threes. We can even sense the spinning of the potter’s wheel from the traces of his fingers left in the clay. The clay used to make this jar has a grayish cast. The glazed surface is crackled in places, and there are traces of sand from the firing visible on the foot. This famous piece clearly reveals the characteristics of 17th-century underglaze iron porcelain with its somewhat rough surface and bold, entertaining decoration. It is designated as Korean Treasure No. 1231.
이 항아리는 위아래를 따로 만들어 붙여 몸체 중앙이 풍만하게 벌어진 조선중기의 전형적인 형태로, 능숙하고 경쾌한 붓질로 그려진 철화장식이 재미있는 작품이다. 문양은 몸체 위아래에 운문(雲文)을 각각 2열과 1열로 배치하였는데, 이렇게 꽃송이에 꼬리를 단 듯한 도식화된 구름의 모습은 흔치 않은 예로, 이 작품의 특징 가운데 하나이다. 풍만하게 벌어진 몸체 중앙에는 가느다란 줄기에 삼지(三枝) 모양의 길쭉한 잎들이 바람에 몸을 맡기듯 이리저리 날리는 대나무들을 시원스럽게 그려 놓았는데, 표면에 남아 있는 물레흔적과 어우러져 보는 재미를 더해 주고 있다. 태토(胎土)가 짙은 회색인 회백자(灰白磁) 계통이며, 표면 일부에 빙렬(氷裂)이 있고, 모래를 받쳐 구웠다. 이 작품은 17세기 철화백자의 특징을 유감없이 보여 주고 있는 명품(名品)으로, 거친 바탕과 재미난 문양구성, 호쾌하게 그려진 철화문이 한데 어우러져 활달하면서도 시원한 맛을 듬뿍 준다. 이 작품은 보물 1231호로 지정되어 있다.
History of the Object
White porcelain jars decorated with dragons and bamboo painted in blackish iron-oxide pigment were in fashion during the mid-Joseon period. Such porcelain works with underglaze iron featuring bold brushwork used to depict broadly humorous scenes, in contrast to the more austere look of other Joseon porcelain genres.
조선중기에는 검은빛 나는 철사안료(鐵砂顔料)를 사용하여 기면(器面)에 용(龍)과 대나무를 그려 넣는 철화백자가 유행하였다. 철화백자는 대범한 붓질에서 표출되는 활달하면서 희화적(戱畵的)인 장면들을 보여 주고 있어, 조선백자의 격조와 정제된 아름다움과는 또 다른 도자미(陶磁美)를 보여 준다.
